The root category is basically a container for the main menu in the category tree. You can create a root category with an entirely new set of products or copy from an existing root category. The root category can be assigned to the current store or to any other store in the same website.
Steps To Create A New Root Category In Magento 2
Step 1: Create a new root category
1. Log in to Admin Panel.
2. On the Admin Panel sidebar, go to CATALOG > Categories.
3. On the left side, click Add Root Category button.
4. Assign a Category Name.
5. If you want to add products to the catalog from the current catalog, expand the Products in Category section. Then, select the checkbox for each product that you want to copy into the new catalog.
6. When complete, click Save button.
Step 2: Add A Subcategory
1. On the left, select the new root category that you created in the previous step.
2. Click Add Subcategory and fill in the information for it.
3. When complete, click Save button.
Step 3: Choose the new root category
1. On the Admin Panel sidebar, go to STORES > Settings > All Stores.
2. In the Stores column of the grid, click the store that you want to assign the new catalog.
3. Set Root Category to the new root category that you created.
4. Click Save Store when complete.
